It's Monday 10/8! What Are You Reading?

By some miracle, I am alone this Monday morning!  My son has been home for two weeks, recovering from knee surgery.  The pain finally subsided enough that he could manage without prescription pain killers.  He slept 16 hours Friday night and woke up feeling much better!  So, he finally went back to school this morning, and I am enjoying the rare quiet solitude.

I haven't had much time for blogging these past two weeks, but I used the weekend to catch up a bit.

Lots of great reading this week:
  • I finished reading The Chocolate War, a classic teen/YA novel by Robert Cormier, for Banned Books Week.  It's a violent but compelling story that takes place in an all-boys high school.
  • I am now reading Rule Number Two: Lessons I Learned in a Combat Hospital, a memoir by Dr. Heidi Squier Kraft.  My state's library system is focusing on this real-life look at a psychologist's experiences in Iraq (I am guessing to honor Veteran's Day next month), so I am reading this for this week's book discussion at my local library.  It's very good so far.
  • My husband, Ken, is now reading 1NF1N1TY by Rachel Ward, the exciting conclusion to the teen/YA Num8ers trilogy that I just finished last week!
  • Craig, 14, will be reading the short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, for his English class this week. Craig doesn't enjoy reading much, but I have told him this is a great story.
I did finally write some blog posts last week:  a Banned Book Week celebration at Book By Book and another post on kids'/teen banned books at Great Books for Kids and Teens.  I also posted reviews of two frequently banned books:  Brave New World and The Chocolate War. And, hopefully, I can get back into a more normal routine this week!

What are you and your family reading this week?

(What are you reading Monday is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, with a kids/teen version hosted at Teach Mentor Texts.)

OOH a quiet morning! I love those. I am in Mankato dreading the 3 1/2 hour ride home I need to start in just a few minutes. BUT I got to spent time with college son so it is worth it ;)

Definitely worth it, Sheila! Our college son was home yesterday, and it was very nice to see him.

I wondered where you were this morning - good to hear from you!

When we read The Most Dangerous Game in HS our teacher left off the last couple of pages and we each had to come up with our own ending.

I still remember that assignment fondly.

I love that your son is reading this week! :) That's great!

If you'd like to stop by, here's what I'm reading this week.

Hi Sue, thanks for visiting my blog so faithfully. In answer to two of your questions. If you loved the Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater, you'll have your socks knocked off my both Scorpio Races and Raven Boys. I can't decide which I like better but I like both better than the Shiver books. Since you like to listen to audiobooks, I might recommend that you at least start Scorpio Races in that format so that you can get all the pronunciations down before you switch to the written word. Both of the books had me enthralled almost from the first page.

Secondly, Sunday Salon is posted on Facebook. Apparently it got so large that no one wanted to manage it anymore. If you do Facebook just add them as a group you follow and post your Sunday Salon links there. The problem with this, of course, is that Sunday Salon posts get all jumbled up with other posts from friends so I am pretty bad about going to other peoples posts unless I've read them before. But it does generate a bit of traffic. You are such a good writer I am sure that others will want to read your posts. Good luck.

I just purchased books 2 and 3 of the Num8ers series for my library. I am glad to hear that you liked them. I wasn't a huge fan of the first book and no kid had ever asked for the sequels but I found them on sale and thought I'd give them a go.

Have a good week. Your picture of your neighborhood in September looks so lovely. The weather has finally turned here and it is rainy and cold. It won't be long before we have frost I fear and then all my lovely summer flowers will be kaput.
